Board Books About Mexico
Our World: Mexico
I’ve used this series for some of our other country preschool unit themes, and the basic formula is there for all of them. It has colorful illustrations and Spanish words blended in with English. The book walks through a typical routine of a kid living in Mexico and along the way children see the similarities they may have with that kid such as the activities they do at school and the games they like to play.
I appreciate that it highlights similarities more than differences by helping children identify with other children around the world while still including cultural features of Mexico. It feels very similar to other board books we have that go through a child’s typical day.
Additionally, the back of the book has a Spanish to English section that explains Spanish words used in the book included with illustrations so that children still want to read it- instead of just being a typical glossary at the end of a reference book.
Yum, Yum, Mexico!
This is a fun one- this book is an A-Z primer featuring different foods in Mexico. It’s not only a great way to introduce different foods (and to get ideas if you are trying to cook a Mexican-inspired meal as a part of a Mexico-themed preschool unit), but it’s also a great book for preschoolers who are working on letter recognition and phonics.
Good Night, Mexico by Adam Gamble
I love this series. Whenever I’m looking for books to help introduce a new place to my daughter, this series is one I always love to include if possible.
In this book, children spend a day traveling through Mexico and seeing iconic sites. It’s a great way to introduce famous sites in Mexico as well as to introduce the culture and environment.
Early Reader Books for Preschoolers
Tiny Travelers: Mexico Treasure Quest
More involved than a board book, but also not quite an early reader, I’m putting this book somewhere in between.
This series is a lot of fun. Each page features a different image and children have to find hidden objects in them. Along the way, they learn about different cultural aspects of the given country. If your child enjoys things like the Highlights Hidden Pictures, this book would be a great one to include in a Mexico-themed preschool unit.
Little Golden Books: Frida Kahlo
I’m continually impressed by the Little Golden Books Series. This biography is well written for preschoolers and while it includes major challenges that Frida Kahlo faced in her life, it does not include images or descriptions that would be scary for preschoolers (like some other children’s books I looked at while preparing this unit).
This book emphasizes how she continually overcame challenges and the importance that art played in her life. Her paintings are included throughout the book, and my daughter LOVED that.
In the first week that we had this book, my preschooler asked us to read it to her SEVERAL nights in a row as her bedtime story. (And what kid is picking a biography for a bedtime story, right?) It’s very well done.
Magic Postcard: Postcard from Mexico
I absolutely love this series. Two siblings get a magic postcard and through it, they travel to different places all throughout Mexico. They see famous sites and learn about Mexico’s history and culture.
I love how this book teaches preschoolers about Mexico while also still really appealing to their imagination. We can’t get enough of this series.
I Live in Mexico by Chloe Perkins
Narrated by a cartoon girl, this book teaches physical geography, animals, and culture. It goes through her morning routine and highlights similarities that all kids share while emphasizing cultural differences.
This book is so accessible and engaging, while still being rich in information.
I also love how this book is presented from the girl’s perspective. Of all of the books, this feels the most personal.

Nonfiction Books About Mexico for Preschoolers
Look at Mexico by A.M. Reynolds
This book covers basic geography and cultural information in a very accessible format. It features large, full page pictures. The sentences are short, making it a good introduction for preschoolers without having an overwhelming amount of information. (Just like you wouldn’t introduce math to a toddler by beginning with algebra, you don’t want social studies content to be so overwhelming to them that they can’t grasp it.)
The famous sight section had my wanderlust daughter wanting to explore all of the Mayan ruins.
Overall, it’s a good, solid introduction for a preschooler. Not too much- not too little.
Your Passport to Mexico
If your kid is ready for more of a challenge, this book has much more information in it. Instead of a sentence or two of text on each page, there are several paragraphs. It includes some history, some geography, and some culture.
It’s great for preschoolers who are asking for more information or elementary aged students.
