National Park Themed Activities for Toddlers
I love creating Montessori- inspired activities for my toddler- especially when the activity is centered on something she’s really interested in. After a recent trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, she was SUPER excited about the idea of national parks. So I created a few national park themed activities for toddlers that are hands-on and Montessori friendly to work on at home.
And through these activities, we worked on some skills that she’s currently trying to master- all while learning more about national parks!
So if you also have a toddler who loves exploring nature, check out these toddler-friendly activities that you can easily put together with very little prep!

Dressing a Park Ranger for Weather
Toddlers are really focused on learning about the world around them. They’re concerned with practical life skills such as getting dressed and as they’re craving some more independence, this is a great time to introduce the idea of how to dress appropriately for the weather.
And what better way to practice this than dressing up a park ranger?
I created this activity that you can download and print out here, and it’s pretty simple and adorable.
The park ranger is in four different scenes and your toddler needs to pick what clothes and accessories the ranger needs.
If you want to make it even more hands-on, have them gather these clothing items from around the house to either play dress-up in or to dress up a doll or stuffed animal that they love.

Sorting Seasons
Another practical life skill, toddlers are curious about changing seasons as they’re trying to make sense of the world around them. They’re also starting to sort based on different characteristics.
So to support both of these skills, I compiled different images of national parks in different seasons, printed them out, cut them out, and had my toddler sort them into “winter, spring, summer, and fall.”
We also tied this back into the “Dressing a Park Ranger” activity by discussing what we would wear in each season if we were going to visit a national park then.
If you want the print outs I put together, they’re available here.

Picture Puzzles- Scenes of the Park
Another great toddler skill- matching up picture scenes of the national parks. My toddler LOVES puzzles, so this was a cheap and easy way to create more puzzles for her to work on.
Download them here, print them out, and laminate them. Each puzzle I offered a slightly different pattern with which to connect the pieces to make it more challenging, but feel free to ignore those patterns if your toddler is in the earlier stages of matching puzzle pieces.
I also made a two piece version, a three piece version, and a four piece version depending on what level of challenge your toddler wants.
They’re all available here for free.

Matching Animals to National Park Habitats
Toddlers love animals, and they’re figuring out habitats at this point as well. Plus- introducing habitats is GREAT way to start building some early, foundational geography skills. And national parks offer so many distinct animals to really learn about.
I created four different scenes of diverse habitats here for you to download for free, and animal images to cut out for them to match. However, I HIGHLY recommend having them place animal figurines over the scenes to make it even more hands-on. (We love the Safari LTD Toob animals and use them A TON for different activities.)
Keep it simple at first with only offering two scenes and two animals, and then gradually work your way up as your child becomes more confident in matching.

Animal Sihlouettes
Another matching skill- matching to animal silhouettes can be a bit trickier for toddlers. I created a set of matching cards with animal images and animal silhouettes to print, laminate, and cut, and had my daughter work on matching them.
To keep it in the national park theme, I focused on iconic animals found in America’s national parks.
Again, start with just a couple of animals at a time and then gradually add more.
The ones I created are available here.

Sorting Biomes
America’s national park system is so diverse with so many different biomes. Similar to matching animals to their proper habitat, I printed out several different scenes from national parks and had my daughter sort them into the categories of “desert, mountains, and ocean.” By keeping the categories simple, she could really focus on distinguishing characteristics of each.
And my favorite part was hearing her say “BIG mountains. HIKE!!!” while looking at different images.
You can download the ones I created for free here.
And if you’d like to download all of these resources in a bundle, I have it for a discount rate here.
