The Best (And Coziest) Books About Snow for Preschoolers
It’s been snowing here nonstop. In our home- we absolutely LOVE the snow and love to make the most of cozy days at home. Here’s our favorite books about snow for preschoolers that we’ve been curling up with this winter (after having outside adventures in the snow of course!)

Chapter Books About Snow for Preschoolers

Sophie Mouse: Winter’s No Time to Sleep
We love the Sophie Mouse books and this one is perhaps one of our favorites. Sophie and her friends go sledding and accidentally wake up a hibernating hedgehog. They show the hedgehog the splendors of snow but then realize they need to help her get back to sleep.
It’s adorable, fun, and emphasizes true friendship. AND if you haven’t checked out Sophie Mouse books yet, there’s no need to read them in order. You can just jump right in.
(If you’ve not introduced chapter books to your preschooler, check out my post here: “How to Introduce Chapter Books to Preschoolers.” Sophie Mouse is a GREAT place to start.)
Good Dog: Life is Good
Another series that we really like with A LOT of full page illustrations. Snow is coming to the farm and all the animals need to get inside and stay warm. Bo helps make sure everyone is taken care of- including the barn cats that haven’t always been kind to him.
Heartwood Hotel: The Greatest Gift
The second in the Heartwood Hotel series. Winter has arrived at the Heartwood Hotel and the hibernators need to stay asleep. Meanwhile, the other animals are looking forward to a quiet season. But when the hibernators wake up early and there’s not enough food for everyone, Mona once again has to figure out how to step up.
Featuring friendship, service, and family (both the family you’re born with and the family you find), these books are so sweet and my daughter is obsessed. Slightly longer than the other two chapter books on this list, this one is geared towards slightly older preschoolers or even school aged children. (And if you haven’t read the first one in the series yet, I do recommend reading them in order.)

The Snow Thief
A follow up to The Leaf Thief, this book once again features our dynamic duo of Squirrel and Bird- two neighbors who really really really balance each other out.
Bird is consistently calming Squirrel down and explaining the world to him. Squirrel is prone to letting himself get carried away.
In this one, Squirrel is alarmed that the snow has made everything white- and then is equally alarmed when it melts later.
It’s funny and my daughter loves their goofy dynamic.
(And if you really want to add in more learning- there’s some explanations in the back for things like why you can see your breath in the cold.)
The Snowy Day
A classic. This is one that I read growing up and still remembered the illustrations for when I introduced it to my then-toddler.
The plot is simple- following a little boy who wakes up to a snow covered world and goes out exploring.
However, it’s the ILLUSTRATIONS that are captivating. The purples and the pinks really capture the way snow can illuminate the whole world differently.
Frog and Toad: Down the Hill
If you’ve not read Frog and Toad- read Frog and Toad. The relationship between calm, encouraging Frog and hesitant, sometimes cranky Toad, is so enjoyable. If I had to describe these books in a single word it would be WHOLESOME.
In Frog and Toad Go Sledding, Frog brings a very hesitant Toad sledding with him and hilarity ensues.
My First Little House on the Prairie Books: Sugar Snow
We LOVE the My First Little House on the Prairie Books. They’re such a great way to introduce historical fiction to young children. In this one, a fresh snowfall leads Ma to make maple candy for them and Pa to teach them about what he calls “sugar snow.”
They’re all snug and warm in their cabin. It’s just the coziest book to read while you’re curled up together.

Over and Under the Snow
You know those books that just feel good? The pages feel nice, the words are rich, and the illustrations are peaceful.
This is one of those books. It’s even a unique size- really making it stand out in our collection.
This book follows a girl and her dad as they walk through the snow and explore the entirely different worlds that are happening both under and above the snow. Featuring animal tracks in the snow and cozy burrows beneath, my daughter was enchanted by it.
Curious George Snowy Day
We love Curious George. A great companion to the TV show, this book follows George along on his snow adventures.

Curious George: Curious About Winter
Another great Curious George- this is a tabbed board book filled with poems. Each poem features a different snowy day activity.
The rhyming is engaging and the vocabulary is rich.
Bear Can’t Sleep
We love the Bear books by Karma Wilson. Meant to be read aloud, these are books whose words are rich with alliterations, rhyming, and cadence. My three year old frequently says, “I like how these words SOUND.”
In this one, Bear can’t sleep and all of his friends come in and make it cozy for him to help him get back to sleep.
Curled up in his cozy den, tucked away from the cold winter, it’s a great read as you’re cuddled up on the couch.

The Snow Dancer
A new one for us. A girl wakes up to a magically hushed world full of freshly fallen snow. She dances in it and is enjoying the magical solitude- until the rest of the neighborhood wakes up. Despite the noise of snow plows and shoveling, she finds a way to still treasure the quietness and peace snow offers.
Bedtime Bunnies
This book is just about as adorable as it comes. A family of bunnies are playing in the snow and then go through the coziest bedtime routine there ever was. The youngest bunny is always trying to catch up. As they get closer to bed, the snow piles up more and more, and it’s just as cozy as can be inside their little burrow. This is one that we read on repeat.
Nonfiction Books About Snow for Preschoolers

Hello World: Snow
The Hello World books all do a great job of teaching preschool concepts. For Hello World: Snow, not only does it introduce the idea of how snow forms, but also how people respond to snow, including the need for snow plows and shoveling. It includes more complex vocabulary like “vapor” if your preschooler is ready for more of a challenge.
The Little Snowflake
While we love the Hello World series, the Nature Stories by Autumn Publishing also do a great job of introducing science concepts but they personify it by following an adorable little snowflake on his journey. The illustrations are so adorable. A preschool friendly way of teaching science concepts (and making it adorable), these books are staples in our homeschool library.
My daughter loved looking for the little snowflake peeking out in all the different pictures as well as learning a bit more about the water cycle.
